Use technology to your advantage and get a gps...
A gps can get you where you need to go
Technology today is advancing in leaps and bounds. Every day another product comes on the market promising to make our life better, easier and more fun. Not everything lives up to that claim but one thing that has definitely made my life better is a gps system. For those who are unfamiliar with the term GPS, it stands for Global Positioning System. Basically it is a satellite navigation system that can pinpoint location including altitude, latitude and longitude anywhere on earth.
The US Department of Defense is responsible for developing the system but it has expanded to a much broader use in today's world. Manufacturers such as Magellan, Garmin and Lowrance are popular in the civilian market for creating easy to use handheld gps and car mounted gps systems. These systems come in a wide variety of models with different features and at varying price levels. Nowadays there is pretty much something to fit everyone's specific needs on the market and at a price they can afford.
Satellite tracking systems have become indispensable for things such as travel and land surveying. GPS devices can also be used on boats for marine navigation. Satellites even allow you to track a package being shipped down to the minute, you could even watch it be delivered right to your door with some shipping companies gps software.
Law enforcement is another area that has benefited from gps systems. When a car is stolen or someone is kidnapped, it is possible to use the gps locator in the car or on their cellular phone to track their whereabouts. If your car breaks down in the middle of a deserted stretch of road, help can find you by pinpointing your location on a map.
GPS or navigation systems installed directly into vehicles work with software
to map out city and state streets. Gone are the days of driving around aimlessly
hoping to come across someone who can give you directions. Some models such
as the Tom Tom Gps actually speak to you, giving
turn by turn directions to your programmed destination. Many nav systems are
factory installed in cars but the Magellan gps and Garmin gps are popular aftermarket
products that can be purchased from a number of retail providers.
The cost of some gps systems may seem prohibitive but it's definitely money
well spent. For avid fisherman, a gps could be a lifesaver if stranded in a
storm. Or it can simply be used for fun. Most finder fish today
come with gps locators built in so that you can save your favorite fishing spot
and on your next trip, drive straight out to it. Then it will show you how deep
the big ones are so you can make the most of your excursion.
