I recently jumped into the world of sport fishing face first so to speak. It was always my dream to own a boat and be able to spend hours out on the open ocean. One of the biggest adjustments that I have had to come to terms with is just how many tools you actually need to be successful. The pros always make it look so simple, I thought I could just buy a boat and the fish would jump into it. Boy was I wrong! I have found that there are a few items that are so essential to successful boating that I believe they should come with boats instead of being aftermarket products. GPS is one feature I absolutely would not leave home without.
Handheld marine gps systems such as those made by navtronics garmin and raymarine are indispensable out on the open ocean. I have found so many uses for my gps I can't imagine living without it. The gps has saved my butt several times when I ran out of gas or oil and needed sea-tow to come bail me out. They never would have found me if I hadn't been able to give them the exact coordinates of my location from my gps.
Garmin makes a really great gps system but in my opinion, if its marine gps that you are looking for you really need to spend the couple extra dollars to get outfitted with a navtronics gps. Navtronics have really made a name for themselves in the past fifteen years producing top quality marine electronics for all types of boats. You don't need to own the biggest yacht at the marina to have top of the line gps and electronics from them, they make models at all different price points and lets face it, if you spent $30k on a boat whats a couple hundred dollars in the grand scheme of things? Especially when that money could save your hide if you ever get stranded out at sea.
